AKSHAYA PATRA - THE VESSEL WITH UNLIMITED FOOD
AKSHAYA PATRA - THE VESSEL WITH UNLIMITED FOOD
Akshaya Patra is a magic vessel with inexhaustible food.
This is a rip-off from the Indian epic Mahabharatha.
The Pandavas were famous for their hospitality. No one left their home without being well fed.
While they were in exile in the forest, hundreds of Brahmans (priests) entered their dwelling place. After sighting the numbers Pandavas were worried that they cannot send the priests without feasting. They searched in the forest for berries and nuts but there were none available in large quantities to feed the Brahmans.
After sighting the large group of Brahmans sitting around her husbands, Draupadi, the common wife of Pandavas wailed, Hey ! God, please rescue me to come out of this dilemma that no food was left at home to serve the priests. Her cousin Lord Krishna appears in front of her and told Draupadi, I am hungry will you not give me something to relish. Draupati said I have nothing to offer you other than half a berry which I was eating when you came. Krishna said give me that to eat. Draupadi untied the knot of her garment and took the half-berry and offered to Krishna. Krishna ate that and burped in satisfaction. At the same time all Brahmans felt that they are well fed and starts burping. They said we have not yet tasted the food but we are full. They could not even sit down as their stomachs were full. They sensed that the gods are with the Pandavas and blessed Draupadi and Pandavas before leaving their dwelling.
Lord Krishna before going back to Dwaraka, told Draupadi ask Yudhisthira to pray to Sun God for food. Yudhishtira prayed to Sun God, Surya. And was given a magic vessel (Akshaya Patra) with inexhaustible food by Surya.. A happy Yudhishtira takes the Akshaya Patra home. The food will last all Pandava brothers are well fed and Draupadi finished her meal and cleansed the vessel.
Pandavas enjoyed food each and every day of their exile and they were satisfied.
Draupadi had a kitchen with a treasure of food. Like any other good house-wife Draupadi's Kitchen was famous and blessed.
At present many eateries are named after Akshaya Patra.
