QUA VADIS - "WHITHER GOEST THOU"

Qua Vadis  -  "Whither goest thou"

Peter fled from Rome during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Nero; as he was traveling along the Appian Way he met Christ in a vision. Astonished, he asked 'Domine quo vadis ?' ('Lord, where are you going ?') or precisely "Whither goest thou".

Overall, the term quo vadis means where are you going? This Latin phrase was used in the Bible when Peter asked Jesus where he was going. In modern times, a quo vadis event   is considered by the Catholic Church to be an event that helps a person encounter Jesus.

In Christian tradition, St. Peter was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus. Roman Catholic tradition holds that Jesus established St. Peter as the first pope (Matthew 16:18). Jesus also gave him “the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19), which is why he is often depicted at the gates of heaven in art and popular culture. After Jesus’ death, he served as the head of the Apostles and was the first to perform a miracle after Pentecost (Acts 3:1–11). The two Letters of Peter in the Bible are attributed to his authorship, though some scholars dispute this.

The Gospels and Acts portray Peter as the most prominent apostle, though he denied Jesus three times during the events of the crucifixion. According to the Christian tradition, Peter was the first disciple to whom Jesus appeared, balancing Peter's denial and restoring his position.

Jesus answering the question of Peter said to him that "I am going to Rome to get crucified again.   Because as earlier predicted Peter denies Jesus to the soldiers who was hunting for Jesus that I do not know him.  He did this thrice before the dawn of crucifixion day of Jesus.

Answering Peter about his question Qua Vadis, Jesus said that  I am going to Rome to get crucified again.  Because his most trusted disciple Peter denied him thrice.  Peter realized his mistake and started preaching Christianity with passion more than ever before and was awarded death sentence by crucifixion upside down by the Roman emperor Nero.

The Bible shows that Jesus told Peter "Peter you are the rock.  I will built my church on thee".

St. Peter the Apostle, original name Simeon or Simon, (died 64 CE, Rome [Italy]), disciple of Jesus Christ, recognized in the early Christian church as the leader of the 12 disciples and by the Roman Catholic Church as the first of its unbroken succession of popes. Peter, a Jewish fisherman, was called to be a disciple of Jesus at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. He received from Jesus the name Cephas (from Aramaic Kepa [“Rock”]; hence Peter, from Petros, a Greek translation of Kepa).

But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. And suddenly, one of those (Simon Peter) who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?"

Peter attained martyrdom by opting for death by crucifixion upside-down by the Roman Emperor for preaching Christianity.  He was 64 years old at that time.

The gates of heaven are said to be guarded by Saint Peter, one of the founders of the Christian Church.

Peter had the key to the heaven's gates.
