INTERSTELLAR - THE BEST SCI-FI FILM OF ALL TIME

INTERSTELLAR  -  BEST SCI-FI FILM OF ALL TIME

The writer always chose Interstellar as the best film of all time.   Interstellar is a science fiction/fantasy film from 2014.  It is a timeless classic.

The film stars Mathew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Mackenzie Foy, Timothee Chalamet, and Matt Damon.   The star cast delivered a brilliant performance.  They were not acting but living in every frame and scene.

It is not an exaggeration to rate this film 4.5*.  However, I am tempted to award 5* on a scale of 5 as a layman with limited knowledge of Physics.  The film is gripping, engrossing, and an edge-of-the-seat thriller.  There is no single moment of boredom.  The movie would have been enjoyed by repeat audiences.  I can't recollect how many times I have seen this film since its worldwide release in 2014.  The film is fresh to watch even today.

The Brirish-American filmmaker Christopher Nolan who is famous for the movies such as Batman Begins (2005), Dark Knight-trilogy (2008), Inception (2010), Dunkirk (2017), and Tenet (2020) had written, produced, and directed "Interstellar".

The British born Christopher Nolan (Age 52 years) known for his Hollywood blockbusters with complex storytelling is considered a leading filmmaker of the 21st century.  His upcoming movie "Oppenheimer" is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2023.

Interstellar is so famous because of its scientific accuracy. The idea of time dilation due to gravity on the behemoth planet, wormholes, and even the black hole shown was ahead of its time.

The sound track is brilliant.  Thanks to Hans Zimmer.

Synopsis :

Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist heads a program with the daunting task of saving the world. A wormhole has suddenly appeared somewhere near Saturn, leading to another galaxy that may or may not have habitable planets.

In Earth's future, a global crop blight and a second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable.   Brand is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers with Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) in the female lead through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind's new home.

Volunteers have already traveled through that wormhole, sending back the possibility for sustainable life from at least three planets through the wormhole. The plan now is to send a new ship carrying human embryos to whichever planet is the most promising to ensure the survival of the human race, with Cooper piloting the mission. Meanwhile, back on earth, Brand will work on finding a way of getting the current inhabitants of earth to safety.

CLIMAX :

In order to save humanity from extinction, Cooper sacrifices himself alongside TARS to shed weight so that his colleague Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) can complete the mission on her own and return to Earth. Cooper thus drifts into the black hole and must escape the collapsing ship around him.

TRIVIA :

Anne Hathaway suffered from hypothermia while filming in Iceland, due to the fact that her astronaut suit was open while filming scenes in the icy water.

The method of space travel in this movie was based on physicist Dr. Kip Thorne's works, which were also the basis for the method of space travel in Carl Sagan's novel "Contact", and the resulting movie adaptation, Contact (1997). Matthew McConaughey starred in both movies.

Steven Spielberg, who was attached to directing this movie in 2006, and hired Jonathan Nolan to write the screenplay, chose other projects instead. In 2012, after Spielberg's departure, Jonathan Nolan suggested the project to his brother Christopher Nolan.

The setting was inspired by the Dust Bowl that took place in the United States during the Great Depression in the 1930s. He revised the rest of the script, where a team travels into space, instead.

The man who inspired the film and kept a close eye on its scientific fidelity is Dr.Kip Thorne, 74, a renowned theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and one of the world's leading experts on the astrophysical predictions of general relativity.

Early in pre-production, Dr. Kip Thorne laid down two guidelines to strictly follow: nothing would violate established physical laws, and all the wild speculations would spring from science, and not from the creative mind of a screenwriter. Writer, Producer, and Director Christopher Nolan accepted these terms, as long as they did not get in the way of the making of the movie. That did not prevent clashes, though; at one point Thorne spent two weeks talking Nolan out of an idea about traveling faster than light.

The giant dust clouds were created on-location, using large fans to blow cellulose-based synthetic dust through the air.

Irrfan Khan was roped in to play the role of Dr.Mann (Matt Damon), however, turned down the offer due to the tight schedule (Lunch Box & D-Day (2013).

According to Albert Einstein's theory of General Relativity, it would take an infinite amount of time to cross the threshold of a black hole's event horizon, as seen by a distant observer. The person crossing the threshold, however, would notice no change in the flow of time.

References Mirror (1975): Andrei Tarkovsky's avant-garde masterpiece deals with the relativity of time and reality in a poetic way. Its nonlinear structure and sudden shifts between timeliness and events create a fragmented experience similar to Interstellar.

Director Christopher Nolan acknowledged this film as an important influence.

This film merited so many trivia and study in its brilliant portrayal of science, fiction, drama, action, and adventure.

5 Reasons why Interstellar is an enormous success:

  1. The graphics are incredible and out of this world, giving you the impression that you are living in space.
  2. The cast did a fantastic job, and the performance felt natural and not uncomfortable.
  3. The film accomplished its primary goal, maintaining a mirror of reality.
  4. The plot is fantastic, and it was impossible to estimate how much creativity went into it.
  5. You will be inspired by the film and motivated to study more about space-related topics.

The film won 44 Awards and 148 Nominations.
