Gulzar
Gulzar, whose original name is Sampooran Singh Kala, is a renowned Indian poet, lyricist, and filmmaker, and is considered one of the most respected figures of Indian cinema and literature.
The lyricist is also the recipient of the Sahitya Academy Award for Urdu in 2002.
The Jnanpith Award is the oldest and the highest Indian literary award presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature". Instituted in 1961, the award is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and English, with no posthumous conferral.
Gulzar is an Indian Urdu poet, lyricist, author, screenwriter, and film director known for his works in Hindi cinema. He is regarded as one of the greatest Urdu poets of this era.
Gulzar says that the Jnanpith is special one since an honor for literature is always close to his heart.
Gulzar feels that despite a literary body of work that goes back nearly 50 years, he has received more accolades for his film songs. Literature has always been my first love. He also revealed that filmmaker Bimal Roy was instrumental in introducing him to films. He penned songs for an innumerable number of Hindi films. Though he was writing for movies, he continued to write books.
Gulzar has huge respect and appreciation for Rabindranath Tagore. Gulzar has translated two volumes of the Nobel laureate.
Even today , the 89-year-old spends a lot of time reading the works of other writers and is aware of the latest developments in contemporary Indian literature. He has translated contemporary Indian poetry from 34 languages and the works of nearly 300 poets. As for writers and poets in Hindi cinema, Javed Akhtar has written poignant poetry in Urdu. He also commented that Prasoon Joshi is an important name in the field.
Gulzar, known for his profound impact on Indian cinema and literature, has been lauded for his versatility and innovation. Alongside his illustrious film career, he has continually pushed boundaries in poetry, introducing the unique ‘Triveni’ genre, a three-line non-mukaffa poem. His creativity extends to children’s poetry, demonstrating his commitment to diverse literary expressions.
Over the years, he has written several poems, songs, and dialogues for many Hindi films that went on to become classics. He has written songs for Bollywood cult-classic movies such as "Anand", ''Kabhi Kabhi'', "Gol Maal", "Masoom", and "Ijaazat".
Gulzar says that people associate me with romance because of my work in cinema but I see romance in everything, even in the pain and struggle, and in my love for the nation. I would like to tell people have an affair with life, you will enjoy it.
Gulzar has given the film industry some of its most iconic romantic songs. One cannot forget the songs of films like "Kabhi Kabhi" and "Ijaazat". The poetry on celluloid captivates you and rises you to the pinnacle of romance.
